Garden Theme Party
Recommended for ages 5 - 10

More Kids' Party Themes

Your guest list is sure to grow quickly with great invitations featuring these types of gardening-themed designs: flowerpots, seed packets, spade and shovel, sunhat, watering can, bees, and garden tool set.

Fill your party space with plants and flowers, either real or silk. Use potted plants, tied with decorative ribbon around the perimeter of the pot, as centerpieces. Another centerpiece alternative is a sunhat with fresh-cut flowers adorning its brim. For outdoor parties, decorate your party area with balloons tied to watering cans. If the party is indoors, a small, vine-covered trellis makes an eye-catching wall decoration.

A gardening party is not only entertaining, itís educational. With a simple activity such as repotting a small plant into a larger container, children learn about a plantís root system, the role of the soil for its nutrients, and how to use gardening tools properly. You can also tie in other garden-related activities, such as creating roses with tissue-paper petals and pipe-cleaner stems, or having guests use crayons or markers to draw bouquets of their favorite flowers.

Salads featuring vegetables fresh-picked from your garden (or grocery store) not only reinforce the theme of the party, but make for healthy snacking, too. Toss together lots of leafy lettuces, vine-ripened tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Pizza can be served topped with fresh-from-the-garden basil and oregano. A selection of fresh-picked fruits is another tasty option.

Skip the large cake in favor of dirt chocolate cupcakes complete with Gummi candy worms. You can find a packaged version of these cupcakes at your local supermarket, or create your own using chocolate cake batter, crumbled chocolate cookies for topping, and Gummi worms that quickly turn yuks into yums.

Goody Bags
Send home a goody bag thatís not a bag, but a miniature flowerpot. A Styrofoam cup works well as the potís base. Fill the cup with an assortment of candies, small toys, and treats. Prop a decorative pencil in the center topped with colored paper petals glued to its eraser, and your goody bag has grown from ordinary to sensational!

Match your thank-you notes to your invitation, or choose a complementary design. Teach your child good manners by allowing him or her to sign their name to each note. Also, donít forget to mention what the gift was that youíre thanking the person for -- and how much your child enjoyed it! Seal your envelopes with a ladybug sticker to remind guests of their gardening day.
